5 Things to Love about Standardbreds
(and yes, stopping at 5 was tough!!!)
1. Versatility
Strutting around the dressage ring one day, bush bashing the next; such is the life of a champ with a stamp.
There are standardbreds out kicking butt in a vast range of equestrian activities, such as dressage, jumping, eventing, riding club, trail, endurance, driving (pleasure/show harness), games, sporting, western, campdrafting, Riding for the Disabled, Mounted Branch police work…
The list is never-ending, with standardbreds being known for their versatility and rising to new challenges every day!
If you’re after the ultimate all-rounder, look no further than a standardbred!
2. A standardbred will always try
Standardbred are celebrated for their willing natures and fantastic work ethic.
‘Go all day’ & ‘can-do attitude’ are probably the most used phrases around our standardbred retraining stables.
Being new to the riding world, a standardbred may not get it perfectly right on their first try….
But you can be darn sure that whatever you ask, they will give their absolute all to please!
3. Loyalty and Mateship
Ribbons and glory come and go, but at the heart of every horseperson’s journey is their devotion to their best mate with four hooves.
In our experience, standardbreds are an incredibly loyal breed of horse.
Building a bond with a new standardbred can take time (if you’re wanting to develop a strong connection with your standardbred, click here to read some of our top tips).
But once you and your standardbred become besties, the relationship you’ll share will be nothing short of magical!

4. Quirkiness
Funny faces, hilarious habits, facepalm fails and countless other unique traits… There’s never a dull moment or belly laugh far away when your mate is a standardbred!
We’ve put together an article outlining some of the most common weird behaviours your standardbred might exhibit. You can check it out here.
5. Underestimated Talent
Let’s face it: everyone loves an underdog!
As a standardbred rider, from time to time you might experience people turning their noses up at the sight of your horse’s champ stamp (aka freezebrand – look your horse’s brand details up by clicking here)
Although this can be upsetting, true standardbred lovers quickly learn how to harness (pun intended) that negativity into sheer determination to prove any naysayers wrong.
That’s the thing about being underestimated: it makes the taste of victory so much sweeter!
